Promoting Intergenerational Learning Through Senior Interviews
Our Mission
Venerari Archives is a collection of senior stories. We aim to give seniors the opportunity to share their journey and what they want to be remembered by. Perhaps it is by their achievements, but maybe also by the times they laughed or cried, as a caring family member or friend, or by the challenges they overcame. Whatever it may be, we hope to capture their story as authentically as possible.
Guiding Values
i. Promoting Intergenerational Learning
There is something uniquely valuable about learning from the experiences of others. When stories are shared across generations, they improve mutual understanding, reduce stereotypes in both directions, and promote a sense of belonging — not by emphasizing similarity, but by creating respect for difference.
ii. Preserving Senior Stories
Younger generations tend to keep memories in digital spaces, which we recognize can be inaccessible to many seniors. Our goal is to listen closely, capture these stories accurately, and ensure they are preserved, so that the lessons, experiences, and wisdom of seniors are not lost.
Land Acknowledgement
We acknowledge that this initiative takes place on the traditional lands of Indigenous Peoples across what we now called Canada. These lands have been cared for since time immemorial by First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. We recognize that many of these lands were unjustly taken through colonization, broken treaties, and policies of assimilation, the impacts of which are still felt by Indigenous communities today.
As our initiative focuses on storytelling, we want to highlight that storytelling has been, and continues to be, a central part of Indigenous cultures. We encourage everyone to reflect on how we can honor and support the resurgence of these traditions, recognizing that for many years Indigenous Peoples were not able to practice oral storytelling freely due to policies of assimilation.
